High-end loudspeaker with open baffle

Everything we have learned about loudspeakers in four decades has gone into the Bob XL. Construction and technology follow the sound alone.

The large horn connects midrange and treble with the air in the room, without compression drivers and without a hard horn sound. Below it, twelve 12-inch bass drivers work in an open baffle, six on each side of the cabinet. This balances the impulses, keeps the cabinet calm, and the bass sounds deep, fast and uncoloured.

More foundation with the Bob XL+

With the Topline XL Subwoofers, the Bob XL becomes the Bob XL+. Each subwoofer houses eight handmade 18-inch drivers with more than two square metres of diaphragm area, powered by 3000 watts.

The bass extends linearly down to 17 Hz. The lowest octave gains colour and contour, and midrange and treble can unfold freely in their own range. The subwoofers can be set up in stereo or mono.

How the Topline Bob XL is built

Open baffle

The drivers work without a cabinet and reproduce impulses without colouration.

Large diaphragm area

Over 1,500 square inches of bass area per loudspeaker from twelve 12-inch drivers. The diaphragms move little and stay within their linear range.

Line array in the lower midrange

Five 10-inch drivers with the same dispersion as the horn. A coherent sound image across the full height.

Controlled bass dispersion

The bass is designed to barely excite room resonances.

Carbon composite

All diaphragms are coated by hand with Maestro lacquer and carbon composite. The natural resin lacquer guides the diaphragm's own resonances instead of damping them. The sound stays consistent from bass to treble.

Crossover from our own workshop

Critical crossover components and the internal wiring are made in our workshop in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

For large rooms

A pair of Topline Bob XL is designed for rooms with listening distances of more than three metres. Despite its height of 2.29 metres, the loudspeaker stands on a compact footprint. The line array in the lower midrange has the same dispersion as the horn, creating a coherent sound image across the full height.

Placement and tuning

Each loudspeaker has its own DSP-controlled bass with 3000 watts. Using the DSP, we adapt the bass reproduction to your room. The bass dispersion is chosen to excite room resonances as little as possible.

The right electronics

Because the bass powers itself, your amplifier does not need to drive power-hungry bass drivers. You choose it by sound. Valve, hybrid and transistor amplifiers all work, and the Topline was developed together with our own amplifiers and cables.

Made in Mülheim an der Ruhr

All diaphragms are treated with carbon composite so that midrange and bass blend seamlessly. Critical crossover components and the internal wiring are made in our own workshop. We finish cabinet and horn in the colour of your choice.

Can I listen to the Bob XL before buying?

Yes. You can listen to the Topline Bob XL in our listening room in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Get in touch and we will arrange an appointment and talk about your room, placement and delivery.

Which amplifier do I need for the Bob XL?

Less than its size suggests. The bass has its own amplifiers with 3000 watts per loudspeaker, so your electronics only power the passive section from around 40 Hz. For moderate volumes 60 watts are enough, for high levels 120 watts. Valve, hybrid and transistor amplifiers work equally well.

How does the Bob XL differ from the Bob L?

Both stand on the same footprint. The Bob XL is half as tall again, works with five instead of three lower midrange drivers and twice the amplifier power in the bass. It is designed for larger rooms with listening distances of more than three metres. We can extend a Bob L to a Bob XL with the Bob XL Upgrade.

When are the Topline XL Subwoofers worthwhile?

The Bob XL already plays very deep. The XL Subwoofers extend it to the Bob XL+ and reach down to 17 Hz. This is worthwhile above all in large rooms and with music that has a lot of depth, such as organ, orchestra or electronic music. We are happy to advise you on whether your room will benefit.
